It is a village that is steeped in history which goes back over 4,000 years and is first and foremost a farming community, followed closely as a rural tourist attraction, well known in Spain but undiscovered by the rest of Europe. Visitors to Galera often comment that visiting the village is refreshingly like taking a step back in time. There is an archaeological dig site and a local museum for those interested in the history of the area and visitors will find the locals very friendly and welcoming.
The village has all of the basic amenities with small local supermarkets, banks, butchers, bakers, doctor’s surgery, primary school, and small weekly market. There is a lovely outdoor swimming pool which is open during the months of July and August. The town is surrounded by lovely countryside that is perfect for walking and cycling and many more outdoor sports and is close to 5 natural parks - Sierra de Baza, Sierra de Castril, Sierra de Cazorla, Sierra de Huétor and Sierra de Sagra. The scenery can be very contrasting, lush and green in some areas, and dry and arid in others. Due to the lack of pollution in the area it is perfect for artists and photographers and the scenery is ideal for those interested in these. Ski-ing in the Sierra Nevada is also only 2 hours drive away so you can be sunbathing during the morning and ski-ing in the afternoon!
Galera is approximately 136km from Granada (1.1/2 hour's drive) and this is the nearest international airport offering flights with both Ryanair (www.ryanair.com) and Monarch Airlines (www.flymonarch.com). The area is also served by Almeria (1.3/4 hour's drive) Murcia (2 hour's drive) and Alicante and Malaga airports which are both approximately a 2.5 hour drive. It is approximately 160km (1.5 hour's drive) to the nearest coastal town of Mojacar in Almeria, although the picturesque Lake Negratin is only 45 minutes drive away and has beach areas where you can swim, sunbathe, hire pedaloes or enjoy a nice meal in one of the restaurants overlooking the lake - an ideal place to visit if you wish to avoid coastal humidity and crowds.
