Galera and the surrounding towns and villages lie about 150 km inland from the Costa del Sol, at an altitude of around 832 meters (as measured in Galera's chemist!!). Although not far from the coast there are some distinct differences in the weather.
Hot, Hot Summers - the weather is sunny almost every day from late May to September with almost no rain. July and August can be very hot during the daytime, but unlike the coast the humidity is low making the heat much more bearable. Nevertheless you would be wise to avoid being out in the open during the afternoon and early evenings.
Evenings and nights are much cooler than on the coast making it a great place for barbecues and a good night's sleep without the need for air conditioning.
Typical day time highs, in the shade are around 30C, falling at night to a possible low of 8C.
There are occasional rainy days and, more frequently, summer storms coming off the Sagra mountain in the evening. These storms are quite intense and spectacular but usually only last for a couple of hours.
Cool Winters - the winter months are typified by clear, sunny days mixed with overcast, cooler days. The evenings are noticibly much colder after sunset. Almost all the rain, (about one third of British rainfall), falls in the winter months. The first rains usually starts to fall in late September or early October. The rain can be heavy but this weather rarely lasts more than a day or two. Day time temperatures can be up to 20C and nightly lows down to below freezing, the record low is -18C but it is more usual to see -5C on those clear winter nights.
The best months to visit the area are the spring months of April, May and June and the autumn months of September and October. Not only is the weather at its best but accommodation is easier to find and the region's superb roads are practically deserted, making driving an enjoyable experience.
